The Jesus of Heresy and History

May 5, 12, 19

12:00pm-1:15pm

Instructor - Rev Shawn Garvey

Location-Center for Health and Wellbeing

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is often vilified as being a blasphemer and/or a heretic; by those in his home town, people throughout Judea, and by the temple authorities who often question his motives. Did you ever wonder why? The answer lies in exploring the Jesus of history; the young Jewish man who lived in an occupied nation who sought to reform his faith. In these three classes, you’ll explore instances throughout all four Gospels where Jesus gets himself into trouble and/or is fundamentally misunderstood - and why some of those misunderstanding are still with us over 2,000 years later. Along the way, we’ll discover a bit about the origins of the Gospels themselves and the communities from which they came.

Controversial Topics - Part Six

May 6, 13, 20

2:30pm-3:45pm

Instructor - Dan Zagata

Location-The Mayflower

Ever get tired of your friends telling you what the government should do and why? Somehow, they have all the answers that only they can see with such clarity. As the US continues to divide among issues, we are going to take a deeper, polarizing look at some key topics. In this edition of Controversial Topics, we are going to attempt to eliminate hyper-individualism, and look at topics from the viewpoints of other people. Why should a 20-year-old care if your social security is going to be taxed? Why should a 70-year-old care if student loans are going to lose income repayment? It’s tough, right? Join us as we dive into these controversial topics from new points of view!
